Anyone with protruding ears, too much cartilage in the ear. Even though the ears in males naturally protrude more thane females, ear protrusion is more of a social problem for boys since they tend to wear their hair short. Girls can hide the defect by wearing their hair long.
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back close to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.
How to prepare yourself?
Avoid eating for eight hours before the operation. This reduces the risk of
vomiting from the drugs you will be given for the surgery.
Take a shower and wash your hair the night before or the morning of surgery.
The Surgery:
Anesthesia: Usually local anesthesia is preferred, combined with a sedative.
Duration:
Correction of protruding ear usually takes about one to two hours, although
complicated procedures may take longer. The technique will depend on the
problem.
The common technique: The surgeon makes a small incision in the back of the
ear to expose the ear cartilage. Then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back
toward the head. Occasionally, the surgeon will remove a larger piece of
cartilage to provide a more natural -looking fold when the surgery is
complete.
Another technique: A similar incision in the back of the ear. Skin is
removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to
reshape the ear without removing cartilage.
In most cases, ear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear
that will fade with time.
Post-Operation
The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved
by
dictation.
Your head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery
to promote the best molding and healing.
After the bandages come off a week after surgery you will need to wear a
sweatband-
like splint day and night for about six weeks to keep your ears folded back
and protected.
Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week.
Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for a month or
so.
Can go back to work about five day after surgery.
